University of Calgary

History

Campus Recreation was established in 1975 through a student referendum that supported its initiation and associated compulsory student fees. Campus Recreation operates under the governance of a constitution approved by he University of Calgary Board of Governors.

The constitution provides for the annual establishment of the Campus Recreation Committee, which is composed of representatives from the university community. These include 5 undergraduate students, one representative from each of the following: graduate students, faculty, staff, alumni and the Faculty of Kinesiology and the Director of Campus Recreation. The committee responsibilities include annually reviewing and approving compulsory student and membership fee schedules and the annual operating budget. The committee reviews the activities of Campus Recreation and provides advice and feedback to the Director.

In 2005, Campus Recreation became part of the University of Calgary Health Recreation Centre - the largest multi-sport recreation facility in Calgary - which includes:

  • Fitness Centre
  • Racquet Centre
  • Aquatic Centre
  • Gymnasiums
  • Gymnastics Centre
  • Climbing Walls
  • Olympic Oval
In 2010 Campus Recreation became University of Calgary Active Living, a term which better reflects the fact that our wide range of health, fitness, recreation, children and youth, and outdoor programs are available to the general public as well as the University community. Creating a single entity also allowed us to combine the expertise from all of our programs to create unique, high quality programming that is unique to the University of Calgary.
Active Living is part of the Faculty of Kinesiology. The Faculty researches health and human performance with a mandate to "lead the way to active, healthy living." Active Living is one important way that we work to achieve our mandate, and one practical avenue we use to transfer our health and wellness researh to the city of Calgary.
